A widely used AIDS medication that was recently recommended as a preferred treatment may double a patient’s risk of heart attacks in comparison to other AIDS drugs, according to a study conducted by researchers in Australia, Europe and the United States and led by researchers from the University of Copenhagen.

Stem cell treatment could fight Aids

Scientists have claimed a breakthrough in the fight against Aids with a pioneering stem cell treatment that protects the immune system from the virus that causes the disease. The technique involves isolating genes which curb the spread of HIV inside the body, introducing the genes into human stem cells in a laboratory, then transplanting the stem cells into a patient’s bone marrow.

AIDS, other STDs still rising in black community

Despite readily available information on how not to become infected by HIV/AIDS, black women continue to acquire the disease at a rate higher than any other segment of the American population. Data released by the CDC indicate that although blacks represent 12 percent of the U.S. population, they accounted for almost half of all reported Chlamydia and syphilis cases in 2007 and a whopping 70 percent of all gonorrhea cases reported in the nation.
